Pianist covering the South of England
Roger Burn Piano has over 40 years of experience in a wide range of styles of music.
I offer pianist services in a range of settings from bars and clubs to dining and weddings in the South of England.
How It All Began
I started learning Piano at the age of nine and gained grade 8 at eighteen.
I became fully professional in 1985, with a chance to join touring bands in Denmark, Norway, and Greenland in a 3-year period.
Following this, I did engagements with Regency and Cunard cruises sailing the Caribbean, holiday centres for Haven, Warner and Butlins as part of resident bands backing cabaret, and spells with P&O, Sealink, and Brittany ferries.
In 1989 I spent the year touring the North of England with Gerry Cottle’s circus band and learnt the difficult skill of accompanying specialty acts.
As well as the holiday companies’ seasonal work, I formed a drum/keyboard duo which spent 4 years backing showcases and functions in hotels in the Torbay area.
I also spent 8 years as a lounge entertainer with Warner holidays, holding a residency at four of their heritage hotels.
This required a versatility of styles- cocktail piano music, singalongs, strict tempo dance standards, and a large vocal repertoire.
I grew up with music and all my family played the piano and sang, I played classical tunes at school but I loved the sixties pop scene so I learnt all those songs too. My first band played 70s rock and pop covers along with dance standards and Latin jazz. Cruising engagements were a tough test for sight-reading I certainly improved my skills and started to really appreciate and understand jazz and the art of arranging.
The years in the holiday centre circuit found me playing 80s and 90s pop and disco using hi-tech equipment but although the synth sounds were exciting to use, it was my piano playing that I really wanted to develop.
The lounge style became my (piano) forte!- the trademark for my work in hotels, restaurants, and at functions.
Singing is as important to me as playing and I love to do vocals, however you’ll never see me trying to be over-ambitious!
